One of the great benefits of yoga is that it is accessible to everyone, no matter your age, level of fitness, or capability.
We offer a range of classes from entry level classes for students who are new to yoga to higher level classes for developing and experienced practitioners.
Ballina Yoga School
Class Information
Beginner classes are for anyone new to yoga or with limited yoga experience. Classes are offered as an 6-week course to provide students with an introduction to Iyengar yoga and give them time to build consistency, strength, flexibility, and confidence. The focus of the Beginner classes is on understanding the shapes, alignment and movements required to achieve the foundation asanas (poses) which are essential to any yoga practice. At the end of each course students may repeat Beginner classes or move to the next level.
General classes are suitable for students with some yoga experience and are seeking more comprehensive instruction. Students will learn how to move into and asana, how to hold the pose, and how to move out of the pose. Given time they will start to develop a sensitivity in their practice through the integration of their emotional, energetic and physical body. These classes build on the foundation asanas and introduce students to new asanas, including inversions such as Sirsasana (headstand) and Salamba Sarvangasana (shoulder stand).
Experienced classes are for students working towards longer holdings and more challenging asanas (postures). Students should be able to practice inversions free-balancing (unless requiring modifications) and have three plus years of yoga experience.
Led practice
This is an introductory course covering the foundational postures to build strength, confidence and flexibility. Beginner courses are most suited to students new to yoga or returning from a break and needing to refresh their knowledge.
Beginner Courses are run regularly and we also retain ongoing Beginner classes during course terms so students can maintain continuity in their learning.
Workshops and intensives give students the opportunity to explore key aspects of yoga in a deeper manner. This builds knowledge and strengthens physical and mental capability. For example, a workshop may focus on inversions and the variations so students can learn how to safely access these beneficial poses, and how to extend themselves. They will also learn what alternative asanas can be done to achieve similar benefits and when these alternatives are necessary.
Intensives are held over a number of days, generally around a theme, so students can understand the benefit of continuous learning, deepening knowledge in the body and the mind.
Note: If you have an injury or illness that may require individual attention, talk to us about our small classes or one-on-one sessions.
Coming to class
Yoga is best performed in comfortable clothing that breathes easily, such as cotton or blended cotton. You can wear shorts or yoga leggings along with a t-shirt or singlet top. Many practitioners wear the traditional bloomers. Ask Helen about these if you are interested in sourcing a pair.
It is best not to consume a heavy meal for at least three hours prior to coming to class. As yoga exercises the internal organs as well as external body, it is important not to have any undigested food causing discomfort.
A light meal can be taken a couple of hours beforehand, and it is important to be well hydrated.
IMPORTANT to note: Water or sports drinks are not consumed during the class. Please ensure you leave any drink containers with your bags when you come to the mat.
Ballina Yoga has a registered COVID-Safe plan with the NSW Government.
To protect our students, teachers, and our yoga community, we have implemented the following health and safety protocols:
- Hand sanitisation prior to entry and upon leaving the school.
- QR code upon entry for contact tracing
- Capping of student numbers per class so that physical distancing and density rules can be achieved.
- After each class, all hard props, ropes, and mats are wiped down with sanitiser. Blankets are rotated on a three-day cycle.
- Where possible, students are asked to bring their own mats.
